Travertine Pool Deck & Freeform Pool Surround
A full travertine pool deck wrapping a freeform pool, with a curved coping edge, integrated steps, and a paver transition back to the lawn.

Scope of work
- Excavation and compacted base around the full pool perimeter
- Travertine deck set on a screeded bedding layer
- Curved coping cut to follow the freeform pool edge
- Steps and grade transitions into the surrounding lawn
Materials used
- Travertine pavers
- Cut coping
- Class 5 compacted base
- Polymeric jointing sand
The challenge
A freeform pool has no straight runs, so every coping piece along the curve has to be cut individually to keep a consistent joint. The deck also had to stay comfortable barefoot in full summer sun and survive Minnesota freeze-thaw underneath.
What we did
We laid out the curve on site and wet-saw cut each coping piece to fit before setting it. Travertine was chosen because it stays noticeably cooler underfoot than dark concrete pavers, and the base was built and compacted in lifts with the deck pitched away from the pool so meltwater drains instead of sitting in joints.
The result
A continuous, level deck with tight joints around the entire freeform edge, and a surface the homeowners can walk barefoot on in midsummer.
