Bed cutback and perennial care
Cut back perennials that harbor disease, leave seed heads that feed birds, and pull annuals entirely.
Refresh mulch to two to three inches. Winter mulch is about temperature stability — it prevents the freeze-thaw cycling that heaves shallow-rooted plants out of the ground.
Water, drainage, and hardscape
Blow out irrigation before the first hard freeze. A cracked backflow preventer is a several-hundred-dollar spring surprise.
Clear gutters and check that downspouts discharge well away from foundations and patios. Most spring settling problems started as fall drainage problems.
Sweep and inspect paver joints. Refilling polymeric sand in fall keeps meltwater out of the base.
Final mow and dormant feeding
Drop the last two cuts slightly to about two and a half inches to reduce matting under snow.
Apply the late-fall dormant feeding after top growth stops. It's the highest-return application of the Minnesota lawn year.
